High Fidelity: Episode 14

How Pay-to-Play Schemes are Hurting Independent Retailers

Data deals are becoming increasingly common in the cannabis space, but retailers are starting to raise the alarm that these pay-to-play schemes are violating the inducement rules set forth by the AGCO.

In this episode of High Fidelity we speak with Owen Allerton, CEO of Highland Cannabis, a top 10 cannabis retailer located in Kitchener, Ontario.

Owen has become a critical voice for independent retailers, recently launching CancelKickbacks.com, an initiative that consists of independent licensed cannabis retailers who are shedding light on the issue of illegal inducements disguised as “data sales”, arguing that they enable predatory pricing and provide certain retailers with an unfair advantage. Owen highlights the detrimental effect these kickbacks are having on the viability of independent retailers and their ability to compete with larger chains.
